The Certified Red Team Lead (CRTL) is an advanced red team certification from Zero-Point Security, building on the foundation established by CRTO. Based on the Red Team Ops II course, CRTL focuses on leading and managing red team engagements, advanced tradecraft, custom tooling development, and operating against mature security teams with EDR and SOC capabilities. It is designed for experienced red teamers ready to take on leadership responsibilities.

CRTL is significantly more difficult than CRTO and is considered one of the more challenging red team certifications available. The exam requires candidates to operate against hardened environments with active defenses, develop or modify custom tooling, and demonstrate advanced evasion techniques. Success requires deep understanding of Windows internals, detection engineering concepts, and the ability to adapt tradecraft on the fly when techniques are detected or blocked.

While CRTO is not a strictly enforced prerequisite, it is very strongly recommended. CRTL builds directly on the knowledge and skills established in the Red Team Ops course, and the CRTL course material assumes familiarity with Cobalt Strike operations, Active Directory attacks, and the concepts covered in CRTO. Attempting CRTL without CRTO or equivalent professional red team experience would be extremely challenging and is not recommended by Zero-Point Security.

Most candidates spend three to six months preparing for CRTL after completing the Red Team Ops II course material. Candidates with professional red team experience and strong Windows internals knowledge may be ready sooner. Those transitioning directly from CRTO should invest additional time building skills in C# development, EDR bypass techniques, and custom tooling. Practicing in environments with active security monitoring is essential for building the tradecraft needed for the exam.

CRTL and OSEP are both advanced red team certifications but differ in focus and tooling. OSEP is OffSec's PEN-300 certification focused on advanced evasion in enterprise environments using a variety of techniques and custom C# tooling. CRTL is more specifically focused on Cobalt Strike operations, red team program leadership, and operating against mature defenders. Both are highly respected. OSEP has broader name recognition due to the OffSec brand, while CRTL provides more directly applicable C2-focused red team skills.

CRTL is extremely valuable for professionals in or aspiring to red team lead positions. It validates not only technical skills but also the strategic thinking required to plan and execute red team engagements against organizations with mature security programs. The certification is well respected within the red team community and demonstrates capabilities that go beyond basic exploitation into genuine adversary emulation leadership. For career progression from red team operator to red team lead, CRTL is an excellent credential.

The Cobalt Strike documentation and community resources, along with the C2 Matrix project for understanding detection perspectives, are also valuable.

The Red Team Ops II course with lab access and an exam attempt is priced higher than CRTO, reflecting the advanced nature of the content. Pricing is available on the Zero-Point Security website and may vary based on available bundles. Even at its higher price point, CRTL remains significantly more affordable than comparable advanced certifications from SANS or other large training providers. Additional exam retakes can be purchased separately if needed.
